But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.4 I call out to the LORD, and he answers me from his holy mountain. 5 I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the LORD sustains me. 6 I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side.
A psalm of David. When he fled from his son Absalom.
1Lord, how many are my foes!
How many rise up against me!
2Many are saying of me,
“God will not deliver him.”b
3But you, Lord, are a shield around me,
my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
4I call out to the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy mountain.
5I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
6I will not fear though tens of thousands
assail me on every side.
Deliver me, my God!
Strike all my enemies on the jaw;
break the teeth of the wicked.
8From the Lord comes deliverance.
May your blessing be on your people.
David was so confident in God that even when he was literally running from his enemies, he knew he could lie down and sleep without having to worry about whether or not he was going to wake up again.
That’s a lot of faith. Think about it, sleeping is the most vulnerable thing we do as humans. We’re completely defenseless when we’re sleeping – or so we think.
As it turns out, when scientists look at the human body, they can see that God not only created us, but He quite literally sustains our lives every moment of every day we’re alive.
Your heart, your lungs, your immune system, the machinery in your cells, and all the other millions of amazingly complex processes and chemical reactions that occur in your body every moment of your life without you even knowing – all of those things are taken care of by God without you having to do a thing.
Think about how amazing it is that you can go to sleep and essentially let your mind completely check out, yet all the systems in your body keep right on humming. I think we take for granted how amazing that is.
So when you lay down tonight, thank God. Like, really thank Him. If for nothing else, simply thank Him that He’s sustaining and protecting you in more ways than we could ever imagine.
And remember: if God put you on this planet and He’s sustaining your life every moment you’re on this earth, then why in the world should we worry about anything else that comes our way?
After all, our God is the God that created the universe and everything in it, and coming to know that and remembering that will give you the confidence to have the mindset David had when he said, “I wake again, because the LORD sustains me. I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side.”
